NEMAA Presents the 24th Annual Art-A-Whirl

Art-A-Whirl is an open studio tour in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s a great opportunity to tour private artist studios and galleries, connect with the artists, and purchase original artwork. Over the last 24 years, it has become the largest open studio tour in the country. Art-A-Whirl takes place annually throughout Northeast Minneapolis, the third weekend of May.

This event is free and open to the public.

Studio 157 - Glass blowing demo's throughout the weekend at Goldenflow Studio

Live Painting
Studio 294 - Portrait demo with artist/teacher Steven J. Levin at Studio Pintura. Saturday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Studio 366 - Mary Pettis provides painting demonstrations throughout the weekend
Studio 385 -  Demo's by Michael Bellotti (oil), Heather Renaux (oil and acrylic) and Peter S. Johnson (watercolor)
Studio 391 - Natasha Keefer/NDK' Designs will be doing painting demo's throughout the weekend (acrylic, mixed media and 3-D touchable artwork)
Studio 400A - Oil floral painting from photo reference by Dyan Padgett throughout the weekend

Letterpress Printing
Studio 271 - Todd Thyberg at Angel Bomb Design will be printing coasters. Come and grab one hot off the press throughout the weekend.

Botanical Printmaking
Studio 139 - Linda Snouffer demonstrates basic plant printing. Demo cards are free to people at the demonstration. Saturday and Sunday 12:15 - 1:15 p.m.

Mixed Media
Studio 309 - Amanda Pearson creates 2D artwork with glued embroidery floss.
Studio 466 - Jill Whitney-Birk demos her process of making mixed media artworks on paper and wood panels. Saturday and Sunday. 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Studio 343 - Fruit still life in pastel by Loretta Bebeau. Saturday from 4:00-8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Weaving Demonstrations
Studio 191 - Sandy Moses Baron will demonstrate weaving on Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Studio 386 - Custom Woven Interiors provides weaving demos throughout the weekend.

Studio 143 - Calligraphy demonstration at the Calligraphy and Lettering Design Studio. Sunday from 12:00-2:00 pm

Studio 394 - Rattle making demo by Claudia Poser. Friday from 5-7 p.m., Saturday from 12-3 p.m. and Sunday from 12-3 p.m.

Ice Lanterns
Studio 314 - A hands on demonstration of a Finnish Glass Ice Lantern from the Ice Wrangler's new book Ice Luminary Magic. Saturday at 2:00 p.m.


Studio 390 - "London Calling" - An interactive art exhibit by Linda Clayton. Paintings are displayed with headphones available for the viewer to listen to the song that inspired the painting.

Studio 381 - "Armor from Words, Words as Armor". Peg Palaskas wears an armor breastplate symbolic of her need to protect herself from the "war on words" in the media. The armor is constructed out of 500 pieces of walnut wood hand stitched together with copper wire. A canvas is available for visitors who choose to paint, draw or write their own personal positive words that represent important things they live their life by and for.

Gallery 332 - "Your A Gem" is an instagrammable museum, curated by Larissa Loden and created by a team of MN designers and artists. The space is a collection of art, installation and fun stuff for you to get yourself lost in. Take some selfies, enjoy yourself and become a part of the art, because you, after all, are a gem and it’s where you belong. Each adult ticket comes with admission to the gallery, a free limited edition tote bag printed locally by the Bitter Buffalo a custom pin and rock candy! Proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association, the non-profit organization that organizes Art-A-Whirl.

Third Floor - Create your own mini button with The Studio School.

Studio 428 - Make and stamp your own bracelet at Alison Wendy Design throughout the weekend. Cost $32 - $38.


Studio 266 - "Sky Parameters" - Lindsy Halleckson presents new infographic paintings based on air quality in Hennepin County. Special presentations include:

  • Saturday, May 18 11:00am-Noon  
    Presentations by University of Minnesota faculty: Mae Davenport (Center for Changing Landscapes), Karen Lutsky (Landscape Architecture), and Dylan Millet (Atmospheric Chemistry).
  • Sunday, May 19 11:00am-Noon  
    Mary Ellen Childs (composer) and I discuss our Arctic expedition last fall.


Studio 390 - Ella Ebner plays ukulele and sings throughout the weekend

Studio 310 - David Huss Acoustic Guitar on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
