My work explores the beauty and complexity of the African Diaspora through a metamodern lens. My medium is acrylic on canvas and I describe my painting style as “ Abstract Afrocentrism. I use the word “ abstract” as a figurative derivative of the verb’s meanings “to remove” or “to separate.
Through bold colors and negative space, I seek to center the experiences of the African diaspora within our own historical and cultural contexts. The purpose of my work is to dispel stereotypical ideas of blackness that exist in the mainstream, and I advocate for the re-centering of black experience in everyday lives.
