Art-A-Whirl 2015

2015 Dates and Hours:

Friday, May 15th – 5:00-10:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 16th – Noon-8:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 17th – Noon-5:00 p.m.

Join us for Art-A-Whirl 2015, one of the country’s largest open studio tours sponsored by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association. Here at the Northrup King Building, Art-A-Whirl is a chance to gain free admission into the working studios of over 250 visual artists working in nearly every art medium.

Interactive/Performance

Performance Painting by Sandra Dowd – Sandra has perfected the art of painting portraits to music. See a large blank canvas turn into a recognizable person in minutes.
Friday at 7 p.m. in room 248

Participate in interactive animation with John Akre to help create a stop motion animated film about the history of Art-A-Whirl.

Join Minnesota Center for Book Arts in printing postcards, bookmarks, and other ephemera! MCBA will be working in various locations to capture activity in the building. Visit MCBA artists printing text and imagery in response to the art and activity in the Northrup King Building. Connect from near or far by using the hashtag #thisisbookart throughout the weekend.

Damnation: Experimental Works Between a Dancer and a Painter (Roche Studio, Studio #442)

Two experimental works created in collaboration with abstract painter Barbara Roche and dancer Deborah Elias are being shown in a “salon” format. Stop by Roche Studio to see a charged encounter between movement and stillness. This is an intimate view of two experimental works inspired by the painting Damnation.

Demonstrations

Clay@3 wheel demonstrations – Saturday at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm

Todd Thyberg will be printing and diecutting commemorative 20 year Anniversary Art A Whirl coasters to hand out. They’ll be letterpress printed on vintage letterpress equipment and along with demos and information about this old style of printing, He’ll let people take away a coaster ‘hot off the press!’
