Susan M. Smith

Susan M Smith is a native of Iowa, having moved to Minneapolis in 1973 with her family. After graduation from the University of Mn Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in 1981, she worked in the design/build field for several years, before returning to her original love of Fine Art. Susan returned to the University of Mn to concentrate on Fine Art, concentrating on painting and drawing. She has been involved in the community aspect of Fine Art through her work at Banfill Locke Center for the Arts as a Teacher and Resident Artist as well as her work with the Anoka-Hennepin District 11 Middle School, developing the After School Arts Studio program, which she directed. In 1995, while working at her studio at 1331 Tyler Street NE, Susan joined a small group of other area artists, community organizers and business owners to create and develop an art studio tour program, promoting the work of area artists and the Northeast Minneapolis community. This effort became known as Art-A-Whirl and continues to be an incredible success to this day.

She currently works from Studio 361 in the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis where she participates in events such as First Thursdays in the Arts District, Art A Whirl, and Art Attack. After over twenty years practicing art in various buildings in the Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood, Susan is happiest to be celebrating such a vibrant and growing community of creative artists.
