Brenda Griffin-Wagner has been creating functional lighted sculptures and paintings since 1994. Her studio, Canopy, was born from a love for nature and spending as many hours as possible hiking in the woods along the North Shore of Lake Superior.
Born and raised in the Twin Cities, growing up Brenda was the quintessential tomboy, preferring the company of a tree or the discovery of an exceptional rock to indoor activities. The world of nature was a refuge and a comfort to her. Brenda has clear memories of lying on the ground, face buried in the grass, closely examining the pattern revealed in an individual blade to that of the entire lawn. Today, it is still important for her to spend plenty of time outdoors and not at all unusual to find her with her nose inches from a tree scrutinizing its bark or lying flat on my back, gazing at the sky through a pattern of interlaced branches. While digging in her garden, swimming in the St. Croix river or hiking on the North Shore, Brenda remains comforted by the infinite variety and resonance of pattern found in the natural world.
