Melody Villars

Primary Medium: Sculpture
Other Mediums: Clay

I have loved painting and drawing all of my life, and began my career at age 5, when I went door-to-door in my neighborhood selling my drawings of horses for 3 cents.

Twenty-three years after my first college experience as a music major, I returned to the U of MN in 1991 to pursue an art degree. There I discovered that I loved both working with clay, and creating 3-dimensional art. So I have focused on ceramic sculpture for the last 26 years. I love to create architectural pieces and also human figures and faces. Working up to 4’ tall, I use slabs of clay to build the form, then add intricate textures by carving, stamping and layering glazes. Many of my structures are whimsical, while others pose questions and mysteries. My figurative works tell their stories through expression and gesture.

I also paint in acrylic, watercolor and mixed media, and teach art to home-schooled students from age 5 to 17.
