About the Northrup King Building

The Northrup King Building is home to over 160 tenants including a creative center to over 130 artists as well as various small business and nonprofit organizations. Here you will find some of the most exciting open studio events in the Twin Cities area.

You will also have opportunities throughout the year to shop at the various warehouse sales for apparel, furniture, etc.

While some art studios have regular full-time hours, others are used as primarily production studios with limited event hours. Simply check our directory and call the particular artist or business direct for hours and information.

The Northrup King Building is open the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 9 pm and is home to two of the twin cities' biggest shows - Art-A-Whirl, which takes place in the spring in locations throughout NE Minneapolis and Art Attack, which takes place in the fall and is exclusive to this building only.

Two years ago, the building coverted a large space on the third floor to new studios and this year it has added more studios to the newly renovated second floor.

The Northrup King Building is actually a complex of 10 buildings first constructed in 1917.

Originally built for and occupied by the Northrup King & Co. seed company, its location adjoining two sets of railroad tracks made it the ideal place to ship seeds across the United States. Northrup King & Co. occupied the building until the late 1980’s when it was sold to private owners. Currently, the building is owned by Shamrock Properties, Inc.

Through an ongoing process of renovation, the Northrup King Building has become a creative center to over 130 artists and arts related businesses and another 30 entrepreneurs and nonprofit organizations.
